Okay so Sneaky Pete is one of those shows that does everything right for two whole seasons and then loses the plot so badly in the third that I never even finished it. And apparently it got cancelled too, and honestly, I don't even feel bad about dropping it.
Sneaky Pete is a 2017 crime comedy drama on Amazon Prime Video, created by Bryan Cranston and David Shore. The show follows Marius, a con man fresh out of prison who steals the identity of his former cellmate Pete to escape a very dangerous gangster he owes money to. The plan? Track down Pete's estranged family, a loud, messy, lovable crew of bail bondsmen, and convince them he's their long-lost Pete. What follows is a wild juggling act of con jobs, family drama, and increasingly high stakes that is genuinely so fun to watch. At least for the first two seasons.
The Experience
The Highlights:
- Marius carries this whole show on his back. He's played with this perfect mix of charm and barely-contained panic, and you're always aware that the whole thing is one wrong move from collapsing. The show doesn't work without him.
- Seasons 1 and 2 are sharp. The writing is tight, the twists actually pay off because they've been properly set up, and Season 2 manages to raise the stakes even higher while keeping the characters feeling real.
- Audrey is everything. She's this incredible combination of warmth and absolute steel, and you love her and lowkey fear her at the same time. Every scene she's in is better because she's in it. Full stop.
- The tone is a nice balance. It's dark without being suffocating. There's real humor threaded through the tension in a way that keeps the energy up without making the danger feel fake.
Fair Warnings:
- Season 3 is bad. Like, disappointing bad. The plot gets bloated, the character work feels rushed and inconsistent, and the tight focus that made the first two seasons so good just disappears. The acting is still solid but the writing isn't there, and at some point I just tapped out.
- It got cancelled and I found out too late. Already struggling to care and when I found out the show got axed in 2019, that sealed it for me. Closed the tab and never looked back.
- Some plot points ask a lot of you. This is a con man show so a certain amount of "okay I'll buy it" is part of the deal. But there are moments, especially later on, where the writing leans a little too hard on convenient coincidences to keep things moving.
Final Verdict
Seasons 1 and 2 are great, just stop there. You'll know when Season 3 starts losing you, and when it does, just leave it. Trust me.
Did anyone actually push through Season 3 or did you bail too?
Drop it in the comments. I want to know if I'm alone in this or if we all made the same call.
