Quick Take: Common Side Effects.

I stumbled onto this one from a tweet, expected nothing, and walked away impressed. That doesn't happen very often.

Common Side Effects is a 2025 adult animated dark comedy-thriller from Adult Swim, co-created by Joseph Bennett (one of the minds behind the critically loved Scavenger's Reign) and Steve Hely, with Mike Judge and Greg Daniels serving as executive producers. The show follows Marshall Cuso, a mycologist who discovers the Blue Angel Mushroom, a rare fungus that appears to cure any illness or injury imaginable. When word gets out, he and his old high school friend Frances find themselves caught in a dangerous cat-and-mouse conspiracy involving a ruthless pharmaceutical giant and a government dead set on burying the discovery. Think a paranoid thriller wrapped inside a darkly funny commentary on corporate greed and the broken healthcare machine.

The Experience

The Highlights:

  • Sharp, Witty Writing. The dialogue is clever without trying too hard. It tackles corporate corruption and systemic healthcare issues without dumbing things down or beating you over the head with the message. Refreshing.
  • Well-Developed Characters. Marshall and Frances feel like real people with actual histories and motivations. The supporting cast, including a delightfully detached pharmaceutical CEO voiced by Mike Judge himself, adds texture and keeps things unpredictable.
  • Distinctive Animation Style. It's a fascinating hybrid of anime sensibility, Funko Pop aesthetics, and classic 2D adult animation. Takes a couple of episodes to fully click, but once it does, you start to appreciate how intentional it all is. The color contrast between the corporate world and everything connected to the mushroom does a lot of quiet storytelling on its own.
  • Tight Pacing. Very little filler. Each episode ends leaving you ready to jump straight into the next one. Bingeable in the best possible way.
  • The Timing is No Accident. A show about big pharma suppressing a miracle cure landing in early 2025 feels sharp and urgent without ever getting preachy about it.

Fair Warning:

  • The Animation Has Its Rough Patches. There are a few moments where the frame rate drops and the motion feels choppy. If you're not used to limited animation styles, it can be a jarring distraction early on. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing going in.
  • The Slow Burn Requires Patience. The show builds deliberately. If you're expecting instant payoffs, you might check out before the story fully opens up. Stick with it.
  • Season 2 Is Still Not Here. Not a flaw of the show itself, but finishing that first season and having nowhere to go is genuinely frustrating. The wait feels unfair.

Final Verdict

Common Side Effects is sharp, weird, and surprisingly moving. If you're into conspiracy thrillers, dark comedy, or animation that actually has something to say, don't sleep on this one. Watch it now so you're caught up when Season 2 finally drops.
